If you are just getting started on your remote worker journey or you have been doing this for a while and you’re looking to change things up this article is going to give you some inspiration. A home office space should be efficient and well-configured as the setup plays a pivotal role in your overall productivity, focus and well-being. Let’s explore some key considerations and practical tips to help you optimise your home office setup for success.
.
Now everyone will have a different space that they are working with, so you have to find what fits and what works and also what suits your own style.
Lighting is the key to success.

The first step is to consider natural lighting. Are there any windows in your space or sky lights? If so, you want to position your workspace near windows to maximize the natural light.
.
Using natural light reduces eye strain and promotes a positive mood. If your workspace does not have natural lighting you can enhance the environment and create a more comfortable workspace by investing in good quality, adjustable artificial lighting. Position desk lamps or overhead lights strategically to minimise shadows.
.
Consider your light bulb choice. Opt for a light bulb that mimics natural light. You can get something relatively cheap at amazon such as these led light bulbs.
.
If you don’t have any natural light in your workspace I recommend getting up and taking a break outside. Even a few minutes of natural light has been shown to improve mood and productivity.
Location matters: choose wisely
Select a dedicated space separate from your living area if possible. Choose for a quiet spot with minimal distractions. Incorporate that natural light if you can.
.
Tech toolbox: Set up your digital space.
Ok so now that you have worked out where your lighting is coming from you know where your desk/ workspace will be. The next step is to consider your technology setup. This includes your internet connectivity, computer/ laptop placement and organization of any cables.
.
Organise your cables straight away, you will thank yourself. There is nothing more frustrating than out of control, tangled cables. You can buy a cable organisation set on amazon which I highly recommend.
Connectivity is key: Reliable Internet connection
How is your internet connection? You want something fast and reliable. When I set up my home office space my internet router was on the other side of the house to my home office setup therefore the internet was a hit and miss situation. I first invested in a simple Wi-Fi extender which I learnt did not work efficiently. I was then recommended a Wi-Fi mesh system and that was a game changer. The Wi-Fi coverage was amazing and was simple to setup. I’ve never had an issue with my Wi-Fi since investing in a mesh system. I recommend investing in a set. Here’s an example of a great quality mesh system that has great customer reviews.
Tech hygiene: Cyber security.
Prioritize cybersecurity by using secure networks, regularly updating software, and implementing reliable antivirus solutions. A secure digital environment is essential for remote work.
Organization: storage and declutter.
Once you have your internet sorted as well as your cables it’s time to consider organisation in general as well as storage. If you don’t have a storage setup or filing solution everything is going to become an organisation nightmare before you know it.
.
Depending on your space this could look like shelving units, filing cabinets, floating shelves, drawer organizers, storage bins and boxes or a bookcase. Organization sets you up for success right from the start. As soon as your workspace becomes cluttered it is easy to become overwhelmed and unmotivated.
Ergonomic essentials: invest in comfort
Prioritize comfort and health by investing in an ergonomic chair or an adjustable desk. Proper ergonomics reduce stress and strain on your body and contribute to sustained productivity.
Cooling and heating.
Does your space have proper ventilation? Cooling or heating? Depending on where you live and the climate these are things you need to consider. Quality cooling and heating creates comfort in your workspace.
.
If you are in a hot climate consider portable fans, ceiling fans, an air purifier with cooling function, a cooling gel seat cushion, air conditioning.
.
If you are in a cold climate consider a space heater, heated blanket, or an under the desk heater.
.
We all know, if your feet are warm than you are warm! Working when your body is hot or cold is uncomfortable and does not make you feel productive. What you want is a space where you instantly feel comfortable, in fact you want to go to your home office setup because it has everything you need.
Soundproof for focus.
Manage noise and control ambient noise by investing in noise cancelling headphones. Or use background noise if needed. Consider acoustic solutions like rugs or curtains that absorb noise and create a quieter environment.
Personalize your space.
Now that you have your lighting, desk, organization and temperature setup it is time to add some personal touches and decoration. You don’t want too much as to clutter your space, but you do want it to feel like your space. Things to consider are plants, artwork, photos or a collectible or two. Something fun and motivating. Personally, I have a photo of my dog; his smiling face looking at me is exactly what I need to feel happy.
.
A personalized environment can enhance creativity and make your home office more inviting.
Shared space
Lastly, if your home office setup is in a shared area you could consider investing in a room separator. This way you are creating clear boundaries between yourself and your personal life. If you have a dedicated room, it is also important to establish those boundaries, so your roommates or family know that when you are in your office space you are not to be disturbed.
Practical tips:
.
Just some practical tips that I have learned along the way:
- Think about back up power. There is nothing more frustrating than being half way through something and the power goes out. Invest in a battery backup or surge protector to protect your equipment during power outages.
- Virtual backgrounds. If your work requires you to participate in video meetings, use virtual backgrounds to maintain a professional appearance and minimize any visual distractions.
- Noise management. Consider any background noise that may be at home and use noise-cancelling headphones or consider background noise apps to minimize any distractions.
.
Hopefully now you have some great ideas to configure your home office setup. Working from home can have its challenges but when you start out right you are setting yourself up for success. Configuring a home office efficiently will create productivity, comfort and professional satisfaction.
.
A well thought out home office setup is more than a physical arrangement of furniture and equipment; it is an investment in your efficiency, focus and overall well-being. Using the considerations in this article you can create a workspace that not only meets your professional needs but also resonates with your personality. Your home office is where you go to be productive and is an environment that empowers you. Have fun creating a workspace that inspires you!
